Career Scope

There are lot of career prospects in civil engineering; jobs ranging from planning, analysis, design, implementation of a wide range of activities. Scope of civil engineer is spread across Indian and across the globe. If we look into the past, great structures such as Great Wall of China, Channel Tunnel in France, CN towers, Delta Works in Netherlands, Panama Canal, Golden Gate Bridge, Petronas Tower, Burj-Al-Arab Hotel, Palm Islands, Great Pyramid of Giza, Aqueduct of Segovia, Brooklyn Bridge, etc. are great FEATS by Civil Engineers.

Upon completion of under graduate course, there are two options for students

  1. Jobs- in core companies, IT, consulting, banking sector etc…
  2. Pursue higher studies – MS, M tech, integrated Ph D, MBA etc.

A student who hunts for a core engineering job has always ended up in a good career. A good resume with excellent CGPA, with good leadership skills and skills for administrative, supervision, who has done impressive projects and internship in B Tech has always found it easier to get jobs in core companies. Extra knowledge in softwares such as AutoCAD. STAAD, Revit, Project Management softwares have made students more employable. Lucrative jobs avenues in both public and private sectors are waiting for students who graduate with Civil Engineering. Also construction sector is experiencing a boom in the country. Many of our students (passed out 2011-2015 batch, 2012-2016 batch) are placed in core company either on campus placements or as off-campus placements and few end up in IT industry.

There are different specializations of Civil Engineering such as Building Technology and Construction Management, Environmental and Water Resources Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Structural Engineering and Transportation Engineering .

Structural engineers plan, analyze, design various structural components and structural systems taking into account factors like durability, safety, economic, environmental and aesthetic factors. They are responsible for building structures which are strong and stable enough to resist all loads such as load against gravity, wind, snow, rain, earthquake etc.

Transportation Engineers design new transportation infrastructures which includes highways, airports, railways, bridges, etc. they apply technology and principles to the effective planning, design, operation for any mode of transportation by air, water or road thereby providing safe, efficient, convenient movement of people and goods and improving the overall economy of the country. Many data such as population, land use, traffic volume and flow pattern data, accident, costs, evaluation of present traffic system and exisiting law and order are analyzed and they come out with innovative solutions to all the problems.

Geotechnical Engineers: understands the properties of soil and its adjoining properties like underground water, rocks, ground water table. Planning and design of structures like buildings, roads, embankments. They also deal with geological hazards like landslides, soil erosion etc.

Building Technology engineers - develops the materials needed for construction of bridges, buildings, airports. Construction Engineers deals with the designing, planning, management of infrastructures such as roads, bridges, airports, buildings, etc. dealing practically with projects, adding more value to it and thereby making project more visible

Water Resources Engineers involves the planning and management of water management systems, that addresses supply of water for human use and its circulation in water distribution network or developing methods of avoiding damage from excess water such as floods. Overall it increases effectiveness and efficiency of water treatment system.

Environmental engineers applies scientific and engineering principles to protect human populations from potentially deleterious effects of natural and human activities and finally to improve the environmental quality. It involves air quality management, water quality management, solid waste management, hazardous waste management, land quality management etc.

In any of the above field mentioned, students can pursue higher studies.
